What is The Gospel?

1. Who God is:

God is holy (He hates sin.) Isaiah 43:3 “For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” God requires a lifetime of perfect obedience to His law. Numbers 15:40 “So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God.” The consequence for failing to keep God’s law perfectly is eternal death in hell. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death…”

2. Who we are:

We are sinners, guilty law breakers. Romans 3:10-12 “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” We are born spiritually dead. Ephesians 2:1 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.” We are naturally at enmity with God.

3. What Christ Accomplished:

Jesus Christ was the substitute for sinners. 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” In His life, He lived in perfect obedience to God’s law. Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” In His death He took God’s wrath upon Himself on the cross, paying sins penalty. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “…that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,” Believers’ sins are transferred to Christ and Christ righteousness is transferred to believers. 1Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

4. Our Response:

Biblical repentance (turning from sin) and saving faith (trusting completely in Christ’s work on the cross) are required for justification. Acts 17:30 “The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,” Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  We must have an absolute surrender to the Lordship of Christ, which will be exemplified in a changed life and new desires. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”  Ultimately, we will spend an eternity worshipping in the presence of God.
